Death on the Diagonal
Crossword mysteries, No. 12

by Nero Blanc

When the Collins family stables burned Belle Graham's PI husband, Rosco, was called in to investigate the fire for the insurance company. The barn manager was knocked unconscious and was in a coma. He was said to have caused the fire while drunk, although he managed to rescue the horses before being knocked out. There are others who may have had reasons to cause the fire. The Collins family patriarch has married again, a woman younger than his children. The children are understandably resentful of her. When she is found murdered, Rosco and Belle must aid the police in their investigations. Belle, crossword editor for the Evening Crier, has been receiving anonymous crossword puzzles, which contain clues to the murder.

A light and easy read, this book gives crossword aficionados an opportunity to test their wits against the police and detectives. The plot is well constructed with realistic characters with enough motives to make most of them prime suspects.

A pleasant continuation of a series in which to pass a few hours with a delightful couple...
