Detachment Fault
Frankie MacFarlane mysteries no. 2
by Susan Cummins Miller
Frankie MacFarlane is a geologist from Tucson, Arizona. In this, her second book, she has
taken a weekend vacation with her brother, Jamie, and a lady friend of his, Carla, into
Mexico. They take a fishing trip with a gentleman who runs a fishing guide service that
they have used before. They hook a big one. Unfortunately, it is not a fish, but the murdered
body of the fishing guide's brother.
While the Mexican authorities question the three travelers, Carla becomes upset and slips
away. Not long after returning home, a student of Frankie's is murdered on campus, and
oddly enough she resembles Carla and is wearing an identical ring. Carla is still missing,
and her family becomes involved in trying to find her and bring her home. The story that
follows is fraught with twists and turns that keep the reader in its grip.
However, the family interaction between Frankie, her brother, and other members and
friends of the family, kept me more interested than the mystery plot did. This is a close
family, well liked, with a wonderful sense of place and family ties. I wanted to go there
and visit with the characters and be part of their close group.
I would gladly search out more Of Susan Cummins Miller's work just to keep in touch
with the McFarlanes and their friends. Too bad recipes were not included, because some of
the food that was served sounded heavenly. |
