The Devil of Nanking

by Mo Hayder

Grey has come to Japan looking for a rare film that was made during the 1937 Nanking Massacre. A film that shows much more than any history book could ever tell. Upon Grey’s arrival in Japan, her mission immediately begins with trying to find Shi Chongming, a quiet scholar who is one of the few survivors. Grey, who has hardly any money and no place to stay, meets up with an interesting American who invites her to stay with him and two Russian women and also provides her a place to work. During her work, she is introduced to another interesting character, a former gangster who is only alive due to a strange elixir.

Mo Hayder has such strength in developing such strong and unusual characters. Imagine being Grey and going to a country where you do not know anyone, have hardly any money, and are on a mission. The characters that Grey faces are each in their own right very different, and add to Grey’s character in their own unique ways.

Mo Hayder also can incorporate the past (Nanking Massacre) and the present in an interesting way. With Shi Chongming’s character, Ms. Hayder shows his presence in the Nanking Massacre and how it affects his life in the present and why he is who he is when Grey tries to interview him.

The Devil of Nanking is another strong novel by Mo Hayder; and fans of her previous works, The Birdman and The Treatment, will enjoy this latest.
