Did You Declare the Corpse?
A Thoroughly Southern Mystery
by Patricia Sprinkle
Joe, the husband of Georgia magistrate, MacLaren Yarborough, wants to go deep sea fishing
with his son and grandson, so he sends his wife on a tour of Scotland with her young friend
Laura. One bright spot of the tour will be a stay at the small village of Auchnagur, where
MacLaren's ancestors lived. The tour group is a mixed bag, with a glamorous young wife,
a wealthy land developer, a distillery owner, a shy librarian. There are many undercurrents
among the restless travelers.
When the tour reaches Auchnager, two coffins appear in the church. No one knows why they
were ordered or who they are for. Soon the empty coffins are occupied by two members of
the group. MacLaren undertakes to try to find the reason for the murders, uncovering
past secrets and hidden agendas.
This is a hilarious cozy mystery with an intricate plot which includes an eccentric
cast of characters. The action is fast-paced with a well-constructed plot. MacLaren is
a likeable heroine with homespun wisdom and real love and longing for her husband of many
years. The glimpses of the Scottish Highlands and its inhabitants give a colorful background
to the story.
This is an enjoyable quick read for a relaxing afternoon...or evening. |
