Dogged Pursuit
A Jack Field mystery, No. 5
by Lee Charles Kelley
Jack Field's wedding to state medical examiner, Dr Jamie Cutter, is only a week away when the body of a young woman
is found beneath a pier on the lake. Jack, an ex-cop now a dog kennel owner, is the unofficial assistant to Cutter.
He sees a resemblance between this incident and some 20 similar cases in the past. The police apprehend a man
observing the police activities, believing him to be the murderer. The sadistic killer has been using the New
England woods as his private hunting grounds and it becomes the difficult job for Jamie and Jack to assist the
police in proving his guilt. There are surprising developments with the apprehension of an FBI profiler and his
connection with the past.
The gravity of the search for proof to convict the serial killer is lightened with queries by Jamie about the
status of the wedding, the reception, Jack's obtaining the marriage license. A humorous note that helps alleviate
the tension is the role of Jack's dog dressed in a tuxedo acting as Jack's best man The story is an engrossing one
filled with suspense. The characters are pleasant people whom you would like to know. Jack has continuing problems
with his adopted New York teenager, Leon.
There are many dog training ideas and tips throughout the book. I found it interesting that the author is opposed
to the neutering of animals, which is in direct contradiction to the universal plea by the Humane Society. |
