Don of the Dead
A Pepper Martin Mystery, # 1
by Casey Daniels
Pepper Martin thought that her upper-middle class life was all mapped out - marriage to Joel Panhorst, membership in
the country club, and lots of shopping. But her father was jailed for Medicare fraud and her mother ran off down
south, so Pepper is now living in a seedy side of town and working as a cemetery guide. But then she slips and hits
her head on a headstone and can suddenly see dead people. Her first case is a Mafia Don shot back in 1976 who wants
her to find out whodunit...
Fans of Buffy ought to enjoy this one, as it is reminiscent of Cordelia and her own parents’ financial downfall
and subsequent supernatural gifts. But that is where the resemblance stops, and what follows is original, funny
and shows plenty of scope for future books (all of which I aim to read). Pepper dates two men, both after her for
different reasons, gets to interview the Mob and almost get killed, among other things. A nice twist on a basic
amateur whodunit, this story would make a great TV series, and already makes for a highly enjoyable debut. Pepper
is a lively but very human narrator, and despite the tidy ending, there are plenty of other plot ends left
dangling. This is what makes for a good series book, and I think that this is going to be a good series. |
