Falls the Shadow
by William Lashner
Victor Carl earns his living as a defense attorney. His main concern in life is the money
he earns and the client's ability to pay. Guilt or innocence matters very little to him.
With no wife or children, he's not fond or familiar with that part of humanity. Suddenly
he finds himself taking a case that he might just live to regret. Francois Dube is sitting
in prison for the murder of his wife. A five-hundred dollar check and his partner Beth's
smitten attitude with Dube find Victor trying to unearth evidence for a re-trial, against
his better judgment.
Victor, always one to be on the lookout for himself, agrees to let Beth handle things,
and in exchange she gives him a pro bono case involving a child welfare situation. Victor
is about to learn about a whole new side of life.
Just when you think this is the story about a convicted murderer trying to go free and
a small child, you'll find a man named Bob. Bob is a man who fancies himself as a guardian
angel of sorts. Bob interjects himself into just about every aspect of Victor's life,
beginning with Victor's teeth. His meddling does not always end with the best results. This
story was very entertaining and quite humorous in parts. It gives you hope for the "Victor
Carl's" in this world, and makes you wonder if people like Bob really do exist. |
