Melanie Vargas, a federal prosecutor in New York, gets a late night call to report to the
home of senate hopeful, James Seward, where two teen-aged girls have died of an apparent
heroin overdose. I wasn't sure why a prosecutor would go to that scene even before a police
investigation had been initiated ...but questions aside, the book starts off in an exciting
mode, and follows up with more high tension action. This sexy, edgy, thriller kept me reading
for most of the night.
The Finishing School is a sequel to Martinez's debut novel, Most Wanted, and
Melanie Vargas is a compelling Latina character who is way above the run-of-the-mill thriller
protagonist.
It looks as though this case might be more than a simple death by overdose, and Melanie is
assigned to the case along with her romantic interest from Most Wanted, the formidable
and irresistible FBI agent Dan O'Reilly. Melanie begins closely investigating the exclusive
school that the girls attended and everyone in it, much to the dismay of the administration.
When it's discovered that the girls may have been transporting the heroin in their stomachs,
Melanie realizes they're dealing with very dangerous people. Carmen Reyes, the building
superintendent's daughter is missing, and Seward is all too eager to name her as the supplier.
Melanie and Dan go undercover to try to locate the dealer who is using schoolgirls as mules
for heroin transportation.
Here are very colorful and dangerous characters, steamy romance and fast-paced action in
this "take me away" novel featuring a single mother trying to deal with everyday life,
a magnetic ex-husband, a not-to-be-denied attraction for her ex-lover and co-worker, and a
missing girl who may end up dead if Melanie doesn't find the killer quickly. What more
could you ask for?
