A Flicker of Doubt
A Candlemaker mystery, No. 4

by Tim Meyer

Harrison Black was enjoying his usual morning kayaking on the Gunpowder River when his kayak collided with a body floating in the water. He was shocked to find the body to be that of his ex-girl friend, Becka Lane. The police ruled her death suicide by pills. Harrison refuses to believe that verdict since Becka would never willingly take pills.

But since the police aren't doing anything to investigate further, Harrison feels he must do this himself. He really has enough problems without this trouble. An unscrupulous real estate developer, Greg Runion, wants to buy adjoining river property in addition to Harrison's River's Edge, which he inherited with his candle shop, At Wick's End, from his aunt. Runion wants to build a condo complex there. Then two of his tenants at River's Edge have developed a feud against each other and threaten to refuse to renew their leases. And Mrs. Jorgenson, Harrison's wealthy customer may discontinue the lessons Harrison has been giving her on candlemaking. The fees she pays for these lessons do much to balance At Wick's End's operating expenses.

This is a pleasant, quick read with an intriguing plot. In addition to the mystery there are enough day-by-day problems involved with the operation of a small business (At Wick's End), and the management of the business complex (River's Edge) to be of interest. The various recurring characters of the series have continued to develop in their relationships with Harrison.

There are detailed instructions and tips about candlemaking for those interested in trying their skill. Also included is Dorothea Hurley's recipe for orange slice muffins. Try the recipe and try to refrain from eating more than one!!!!!
