Gentlemen and Players
by Joanne Harris
Wow! That's the first word that I can use to describe this great new novel by Ms. Harris.
Gentlemen and Players takes place in a British boarding school. There are several
characters, including a long-time teacher, a caretaker and his son, as well as other students
and teachers who all interact with each other. What starts off as simple pranks turns into
much more dangerous stuff and no one is quite sure how or why it has happened.
Joanne Harris has done a remarkable job in creating distinct characters that each have
their own special quirks and who interact extremely well in Gentlemen and Players.
Each chapter is marked by a chess piece which separates the character's point of view.
Readers should keep these chess pieces in mind while reading. They add to the complex
twists and turns throughout Gentlemen and Players. Readers will not completely
understand what has happened and why it has happened until the very end, a true sign of
a great mystery writer. Joanne Harris has written several novels and by far Gentlemen and
Players is one of her best. Any fan of Ms. Harris' will appreciate her efforts in
this novel. |
