The Hard Way
A Rachel Alexander Mystery #9
by Carol Lea Benjamin
Rachel Alexander is off to face another mystery. This time, she is asked by a well-known business owner, Eleanor
Redstone, to find out if her father, Gardner Redstone, was accidentally pushed into a subway or if he was murdered.
In order to solve the case, Rachel sets off on the streets of New York City during the winter to find witnesses and
the homeless man who allegedly killed Gardner. Luckily, Rachel is helped by an Iraq War veteran who cannot
remember his identity.
The Hard Way has a lot of suspects who could have had a motive for wanting Gardner dead. This reader was
hoping that there would have been more undercover work as a homeless person done by Rachel but the undercover work
that was done seemed realistic for New York City and for the work done by a private investigator. The side plot
of trying to identify the Iraq War veteran was a nice touch to the complicated mystery of who killed Gardner
Redstone.
The setting of New York City in winter was classic and added that element of urgency to solving the mysteries,
if only so Rachel wouldn’t have to continue being "homeless." Rachel did learn an important lesson about how
fortunate she was and it was enjoyable to read that a character can appreciate what they have. |
