A
Harvest of Bones
Chintz 'n China Mystery series, No. 4
by Yasmine Galenorn
Emerald O'Brien is facing another Halloween and another birthday in Yasmine Galenorn's
latest installment in the Chintz 'n China Mystery series. A Harvest of Bones finds
Em second-guessing the age difference between her fireman boyfriend and herself while
she is battling corpse candles, a lost cat, and an Irish ghost on the property adjacent
to her house. All of Em's witchy talents are called upon, as well as those spiritual gifts
from her best friend's American Indian aunt, and even those growing abilities of her two children.
The mystery in A Harvest of Bones is puzzling and frightening for Em and her
family, but it also reaches a very satisfying conclusion.
The books in the Chintz 'n China series are fast-paced and complex. There isn't a hasty
or implausible "magical" answer to the mysteries in each. This one, A Harvest of Bones,
goes ever deeper into the paranormal. Em admits that ghosts aren't something that she knows
how to handle and seeks more expert advice. She also struggles with raising children in
her beliefs, presenting the reality of the paranormal/spiritual experience without frightening
them, yet affirming their own burgeoning abilities. It is the plight of any mother practicing
a belief that isn't part of a majority culture.
Galenorn's portrayal of paranormal activities and the remedies that Em and her friends
use to counter them are accurately depicted and sometimes cleverly inventive. Galenorn
is able to speak of these beliefs and abilities with sensitivity and a sense of reality.
