David Sloane, a wrongful death attorney in San Francisco has won fourteen cases in a row.
He faces a hostile judge, hates his client and the case, but wins. He seems to have "a
silver tongue", being able to convince a jury despite the evidence to the contrary. He
recieves a package from a complete stranger, Joe Branick, which changes his whole life.
Branick, special assistant and personal friend of the President of the United States
turns up an apparent suicide. Before he apparently killed himself he mailed a package to
Sloane which contains information about what has been Sloane's mysterious past. Sloane
has been having recurring nightmares about his childhood which have been unexplained. He
seeks more information from Charles Jenkins, a former CIA agent who also has nightmares.
Sloane shares his nightmares with Jenkins, who is a complete stranger, but who served
with Branick overseas with the CIA.
West Virginia police detective, Tom Molia, is investigating the suicide of Branick and
is convinced that this is not suicide but murder. It is being stonewalled by the government.
The combination of the death of a kindly old woman, a rookie cop and two beloved dogs
make Branick's death personal for Sloane and Jenkins. Together with Molia they find an
international conspiracy 30 years in the making which may kill the President of the United States.
A gripping legal thriller, this is guaranteed to keep the reader burning
the midnight oil. The characters are believable. The story is well
written and filled with suspense. There is plenty of action in distant
places (Far East) and the United States which will grip the reader's
attention.
