Lifeless
Tom Thorne Series #5
by Mark Billingham
Lifeless, by Mark Billingham, investigates a series of killings involving homeless alley sleepers on the streets
of London. Ex-Detective, Tom Thorne, goes undercover to help Scotland Yard find the murderous foe. He must find the
connection to this nomadic society through the only discovered link to the murders, a tattoo. Piercing through the
surface, a final clue emerges and Thorne enlists the support of his new-found friends to trap his man.
Billingham uses the likable, street-wise character Spike, leading us through west side London, to mesh the sleepers
and the suits together. The relationship between Thorne and Spike gives life to the story and meaning to Thorne’s life.
The Lifeless plot is unique and interesting, but could have produced more intrigue with a few more unanswered
questions to keep it edgy. The storyline and strong dialogue are typically American, so I did have to remind myself
that the setting was in Bloody London, Scotland Yard, and all that.
It is a vigorous read, and for you Billingham fans, who have enjoyed his previous works, this one may be right up
your alley. If you are looking for more of Billingham’s bobby thrillers, try The Burning Girl, another in the
Tom Thorne detective series. |
