The Lion's Game
Second John Corey story
by Nelson DeMille
Read by Boyd Gaines
John Corey is a former NYPD homicide detective now working with the Anti-Terrorist Task Force. Corey seems to top
off this group of eclectic characters ready to challenge Islamic terrorists, but admits he’d rather chase Irish
terrorists. His attractive, meddling mentor, Kate Mayfield, has other plans for him. Corey is your typical fictional
NYPD detective - cynical, arrogant, skilled in dry humor and driven, which makes his character so engaging. When
the Task Force is sent to New York’s JFK airport to meet a flight delivering Asad, a known terrorist, and his US
government escorts, they discover a mass tragedy and no Asad. Corey seizes control of the situation and takes
Mayfield along for the ride.
DeMille takes readers back to 1986, when young Asad’s path as The Lion began. Back to the night he first seduced
a young girl, then murdered her. That same night a military bombing killed his mother. Blind to his own murderous
wrongdoing, Asad becomes obsessed with revenge towards those who did the actual bombing. It takes years, but once
he’s in America, the mindless evil begins. It’s a grizzly path of destruction.
DeMille does well in showing Asad’s extremist behavior and distorted view of his immoral violence, betrayal and
needless cruelty. The story line is intense - sometimes frightening. Boyd Gaines narrates the audio version. This
is one compelling listen you can’t miss. Lots of violence in this one, so remember your headphones. |
