Murder Can Run Your Stockings
A Desiree Shapiro Mystery #13

by Selma Eichler

Desiree Shapiro is back! The fun, feisty female private eye is on a new case.

Ben Berlin lived with his Aunt Bessie for most of his senior year in high school. It has been years since he has seen her but they have remained very close. Now she's dead.

Flying to Manhattan for Bessie's funeral, Ben happens to be seated next to Desiree. A conversation ensues. Ben's aunt had been wearing high heels when she lost her balance. She fell down the basement stairs, breaking her neck. Normally this would just be considered a horrible tragedy but in Bessie's case there's a twist.

A few years prior, Bessie had fallen down those same stairs while wearing high heels. Luckily she was close to bottom and broke only her ankle. After a painful and protracted healing period, she swore to never again attempt those stairs wearing anything but flats. Why would she change her mind? How could she forget? Or could she have been pushed?

Ben hires Desiree to check out all of the suspects. These include his cousin, Joel; Joel's fiancé, Frankie; a developer who wants to buy Bessie's beachfront property and even her dry cleaner!

On the personal front, the situation with Desiree's sometimes-boyfriend, Nick Grainger, is heating up again. With Nick's evil nine-year-old visiting his grandparents, Nick is able to spend more time with Desiree. And, boy do they take advantage of their time alone!

This book is filled with likeable characters whom I will enjoy reading more about. It is a fun, easy read.
