Murder Over Easy
A Trailer Park Mystery, No. 2

by Jimmie Ruth Evans

Wanda Nell Culpepper may work two blue collar jobs and live in a trailer, but don’t make the mistake her former mother-in-law does of thinking of her as no good trailer park trash. She’s a hardworking, smart mother of three carefully raised kids, and the obvious choice to take things in hand when her boss Melvin at the local diner gets arrested for murder. The victim was a fellow waitress to whom Melvin had turned when Wanda Nell made it clear she wanted to stay just friends. Melvin may have been happy with the result, but Fayetta had broader ideas. Ideas that got her tangled up with some of the biggest power brokers in their small town, and probably got her killed. These are men used to rolling over anyone between them and what they want, from the local police investigating a murder to nosy waitresses who may be stirring up more trouble than they can handle. Wanda Nell ends up juggling a murder investigation and running the diner in between dealing with problems with her children, her former mother-in-law, and her love life. Not to mention once again (the one in the first book was also laugh out loud funny) participating in an example of her helpful neighbor Mayrene’s, um, creative interrogation methods. A quiet life just isn’t on the agenda.

This is a great example of a cozy, regional mystery, drenched in sense of place and the rich flavor of its small town southern US setting. That flavor and sense of place is done right - with word choice and phrasing, knowledgeable description and the characteristic ways people interact. The author doesn’t cheat with annoying tricks like transliterating conversations into dialect, but you still mentally hear it in a soft, slow southern drawl. You believe in these people and this place and the problems they have, and just as importantly, you care about them. All of this is presented in smooth, evocative prose that goes down as sweet and easy as Tupelo honey, with apologies to Van Morrison. Recommended.
