Santa Fe police chief Kevin Kerney receives an unexpected visit from his boyhood friend
Johnny Jordan, a former rodeo rider. Jordan is involved in the production of a modern
Western film to be filmed in the remote southwest part of the state, known as Bootheel.
Jordan wants Kevin to serve as technical adviser about police procedures in the film.
Kerney is convinced to take his wife, Army Lt.Col. Sara Brannon, and their three year old
son, Patrick, along with him for a vacation.
On the way to the location, Kerney discovers a body dumped on the highway. He learns
that the body is that of an undercover Border Patrol agent. U.S. Custom agents join Kerney
in an investigation into possible illegal immigrants and drug smuggling.
Meantime, Sara's army job interrupts their plans. She is sent to Ireland where she must
track down and seize the notorious George Spaulding, a wartime deserter and gem smuggler.
She uncovers connections which reach high levels in the Pentagon and the White House.
Sara's unexpected job assignment forces changes in their plans and Kevin is left with
the care of their young son. This gives him distraction from his investigations and his
problems with Jordan's strange behavior.
This book is fast moving with two separate plots. There is much detail given to the
settings. The country of southwest New Mexico is vividly described, as is the atmosphere of
Ireland. The focus is on the characters: the problems of their careers which have created
a long distance marriage; the joys and adjustments of middle age parenthood. Young Patrick
is a delight with his love of horses. The problems of the law in trying to control illegal
immigration across the border are presented in detail. Sara's investigation is complex
with its intriguing connection to the past.
The book is engaging, full of atmosphere and action.
