Now You See Me
Molly Blume mystery, No. 4
by Rochelle Krich
Molly Blume is a crime columnist, a true crime writer and an amateur detective. She has
recently married a rabbi. On a book signing tour she becomes alarmed when the same man
comes to each of the signings. She wonders if he is stalking her. When she confronts him,
she learns that Rueben Jastrow is desperate to enlist her aid in finding his daughter,
Hadassah. The 18 year old has run away from home and disappeared with a man she met on
the Internet through a chat room. If made public, her disappearance will, in Jewish tradition,
ruin her reputation and that of her family. Molly agrees to undertake the investigation
even though she has mixed feelings about Rueben, who was once her teacher. When the man
who is believed to have lured Hadassah away turns up dead, and Hadassah returns home with
no explanation, Molly begins to speculate whether this was a random kidnapping or a case
of revenge against Rueben. During the course of Molly's investigations she visits the
internet chat rooms, probes cases of teen suicides and covers the topic of academic cheating.
All must be looked into before she can determine the truth.
Krich presents an insight into the world of Orthodox Judaism, its rituals and traditions.
Molly is a warm and compassionate woman trying to balance her profession with her new
life as the wife of a rabbi. The warmth of the Jewish community is successfully evoked.
The subject of the dangers of chat rooms on the internet, with the anonymous nature of
its participants, is a timely one. The plot is well developed with enough red herrings
to confuse the reader and keep him guessing. |
