Obsessed
by Ted Dekker
Ted Dekker is a master storyteller. His thriller, Obsessed, weaves events from 1944 Poland and 1973 Los
Angeles into an intriguing puzzle. The story follows Stephan Friedman’s search for the Stones of David, relics
purported to be made from the rocks that David used to slay Goliath. They are worth millions. Matching his quest
is German Roth Braun, who is the son of his birth mother’s concentration camp tormentor, and who is also determined
to possess the stones.
There are two stories here, but they are intertwined in each era. Switching scenes back and forth, readers
discover more about Friedman’s past and the cruelty that Braun witnessed and perpetuated. Both men are obsessed
with finding the stones; one for the power they are supposed to possess, and the other for a connection with his
past.
Dekker explores the concept of obsession in repeated layers throughout the book. There were even innocent
references, almost puns, about obsession. But the doggedness with which Friedman continued to find ways to get
what he considered his, was often over the top. Sometimes, I just wanted him to give up on his narrow focus and
find some alternative way. Yet, that kind of focus was essential to the story. Still, Dekker had me reading late
into the morning with this page turner. |
