The Orkney Scroll
Archaeological mystery, No. 10

by Lyn Hamilton

Canadian antique dealer Lara McClintoch is asked for her opinion about the authenticity of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh writing cabinet by one of her wealthiest customers, Blair Baldwin. Baldwin wishes to purchase it from Trevor Wylie, another antique dealer. She isn't given much time to study the cabinet because Baldwin wants to buy it before a rival collector, lawyer Desmond Crane, buys it. The cabinet is proved to be a fraud. Wylie is murdered. Baldwin is arrested for the murder. His motive, according to the police, is anger at being duped by the forgery.

To salvage her reputation, Lara must find who is forging the antiques and who really killed Wylie. Her search takes her to Glasgow, Scotland and the Orkney Islands where she must contend not only with the search for the forger, but also with Wylie's girlfriend who loaned him money to locate an ancient treasure.

The plot is a very complex one, combining the search for a furniture forger with the search for a solution to an ancient Icelandic legend. The locale of the Orkney Islands and Scotland is vividly drawn. The personalities of the people of Orkney are portrayed as super friendly, incredible and desirable in this day and age. There is plenty of historical information about the Orkney Islands and their legends.
