Say It With Bullets
The Hard Case Crime Series #018
by Richard Powell
One word describes this book for me, and that is nostalgic - from the cover art to the
characters featured in this book. The setting of this book is in a time when bus tours
were popular -think 1950s, post-war. Richard Powell is a good storyteller. His book,
Say It With Bullets, is an exciting mystery where Bill Wayne is trying to find
out who left him for dead in China after being shot in the back...by going town to town
where his past army buddies now live on this bus tour, each town conveniently featured
on this trip. Each chapter leads to new clues and eventually the story turns predictable
but remains interesting and entertaining. If not taken too seriously, this story is a
good one. I liked the female lead character, Holly Clark, now a woman but a girl he knew
growing up. She's the tour guide and is not clueless when Bill Wayne starts acting shady
and also seems to be oblivious to that fact that Bill doesn't necessarily want her around,
even though she's attractive.
Surprisingly a fast read, I finished quickly. This would make a great weekend or "just 'cause" read.
I have become interested in this reprinted mystery genre...a new and interesting spin in
my little literary world. I sometimes felt like this could be a made for tv movie - not
necessarily worth a full priced ticket - but definitely still enjoyable. |
