Shadows
by Edna Buchanan
A historic house called The Shadows is about to be leveled to make room for more condos,
when a grisly surprise is found in the cellar. The house was built by a notorious rumrunner
in the 1920s, but his son was a respected pillar of the community with a devoted wife and
four children. All that stopped abruptly in 1961 when he was shot, but now the Miami
Police Department's Cold Case Squad are back on the case again, and are about to find
that cold cases can sometimes get very hot indeed.
I got quite hot too with excitement as the pages turned, and if like this reviewer you
are a fan of the TV series Cold Case this is right up your dark alley. It is a
teasing case with plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting, and a loveable cast
of very human cops with lives and problems of their own, one of which is the second case
being reopened. I hadn't read any books by this author before and wondered whether jumping
in at this point in the series was a good idea. Rest assured that it is a separate case
that doesn't refer back to anything else in that annoying way too many series entries
have. The author obviously knows Miami inside out and gives an almost tangible picture
of a heat-drenched place filled with life and the long shadows of history. Will I read
another? I can't wait! |
