Techno-Noir
by Eva Batonne and Jeffrey Marks, eds.
In this tidy little volume of mysteries, editors Eva Batonne and Jeffrey Marks (noted mystery writers in their own
right) offer eighteen delicious stories rooted in some sort of technology. Whether the subject is crime lab science,
a science fiction time machine, or computer technology, these stories hinge on one factor of science. That’s the
techno part of the book’s title, Techno-Noir. The noir part has more to do with mystery and crime than with
true noir writing, which is often dark and gritty and treads into hardboiled detective stories. The eighteen authors
in this collection trot out an odd assortment of characters in a variety of commonplace situations. We see small town
sheriffs, hallucinating divorcees, revengeful ex-husbands, and even blind photographers. All deal with murder or crime
of some fashion.
The stories are well-done, capturing the best of short story writing, developing character and plot quickly and
expertly, developing twists that are sure to satisfy readers. The authors are a motley crew of veteran mystery writers
like Bill Crider, author of We’ll Always Have Murder, and Kris Neri, author of the Tracy Eaton mysteries, as
well as newcomers like Arla Gregory, who is a former newspaper reporter, and Flora Davis, a magazine journalist. There
is even a story each from editors Batonne and Marks.
Techno-Noir has something here for every mystery and crime fiction fan. The stories are clever without
resorting to gore and sensationalism. They are all a pleasure to read. |
