Josephine (Jo) Tulip writes a helpful hints column following in the footsteps of her grandmother.
She is also a part-time home economics teacher at the local high school. On the eve of her
wedding to Bradford, she has been called in by the police to explain the unusual and bizarre
appearance of Edna Pratt, who was found dead in her own home. Edna was an ardent admirer
of Jo's Smart Chick household hint column and had followed many of her suggestions. Jo's
neighbor and lifetime friend, Danny Watkins, has recommended Jo to the police to explain
the many strange items found with Edna's body. Danny has also been trying to dissuade Jo
from marrying Bradford, having discovered that what he thought is true friendship is really
more than that: he is in love with her and must now try to win her love.
In examining Edna's death Jo believes it was not the accident the police had ruled,
but murder most foul. She convinces Danny and together they set out to prove it to be
murder and to find the murderer.
Meet the new kid in town. Mindy Starns Clark has added Josephine (Jo) Tulip to the
ranks of female amateur sleuths. It is a welcome addition. Jo is a smart, enterprising and
clever young woman who must find her way out of the humiliation of being stood up at the
altar to the true road to happiness.
Interspersed between the chapters of the story are excerpts from the archives of the
Smart Chick columns. The columns are questions and answers (a la Ann Landers and Heloise),
which provided readers with household hints (some of them very useful) along with a bit
of sassy commentary by Jo.
Take equal parts of mystery, romance and wit and you have the recipe for an outstanding
series by Mindy Starns Clark. We hope to read more of Jo's future activities. Will she finally
realize her true feelings toward Danny? Stay tuned for the next episode...
