Twisted Perception

by Bob Avey

Kenny Elliot is a detective in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He came there as young man from Porter. When he was young Kenny was a high school football star that had grown up poor, with no father and a mother with troubles of her own. Kenny thinks he has left all this behind until he is called to investigate the murder of Lagayle Zimmerman.

At the scene of Lagayle's murder a necklace is hanging from her rearview mirror. As Kenny sees this he is taken back in time to his high school days when a dear friend of his was found dead in his car with his girlfriend also dead beside him. A necklace with his friend's class ring on it was hanging from the driver's rear view mirror. For a brief time Kenny was a suspect. He had quarreled publicly with his friend the day before. Eventually it was ruled a murder-suicide but Kenny never shook that stigma and was advised by a kindly sheriff to move away and leave the past behind.

Now Kenny feels he must return to Porter and put the old ghosts to bed. As the body count rises Kenny realizes that the murder-suicide verdict may have been wrong and the case may be tied to his current case. Once again Kenny becomes a suspect and must prove his innocence once and for all.

The author, Bob Avey, creates a very likable character in Kenny Elliot. The mystery is well presented and is such as I was unable to guess the truth until the very end. I love a story that keeps me on my toes.
