Vineyard Prey
A Martha's Vineyard mystery, No. 16
by Philip R Craig
J W Jackson, ex cop, enjoying disability retirement in Martha's Vineyard spends part of is time scallop fishing.
When Joe Began asks JW to smuggle him onto the Vineyard, Jackson doesn't hesitate. Began saved Jackson's life in
Vietnam. Jackson suspects that Began has been involved in highly sensitive government work. Began reveals that
an operation went wrong, and one of the operators, Harkness, survived but was disabled. The only survivors of the
operation are Began, Harkness and beautiful Kate McLeod. Began is under the impression that they are being pursued
by a ruthless killer known as the Easter Bunny and thinks the Easter Bunny will be tracking them to the Vineyard.
Ensuing events lead Jackson and Began to wonder whether the killer is the Easter Bunny or someone closer to home
who seems to be all too familiar with the Vineyard and their homes. The pursuit of the assassin places the families
of the two men in jeopardy and they must be protected. The denouement is unexpected and sudden.
The story is full of thrills with a few red herrings to confuse the reader. The fishing for scallops is of
interest and is described in detail. The preparation of the scallop-based meals is included in the narrative,
piquing the appetite of the reader. The dependency of Jackson and Began is a tribute to their friendship and
gratitude. The pursuit of the killer is suspenseful and at times breathtaking with few previous hints as to the
identity of this killer. |
