Judge Deborah Knott has finally married the man who will make her happy. How odd that he was hiding among her brother’s
friends and had been around most of her life. She had turned to Deputy Sheriff Dwight Bryant as to an older brother
over the years when her life was at a standstill; as a friend he was always there.
Deborah and Dwight's life was rolling along extremely well until Dwight got an odd call from his eight-year-old
son begging him to come get him for the weekend. Upon arriving at the boy's home he realizes that his ex-wife has
gone missing and left the boy alone overnight. In an odd mix-up, Dwight's son Cal also turns up missing.
Meanwhile back in town, a redneck wife beater has turned up dead, shot through the head while drinking a beer on
the way home.
As Dwight searches frantically for his missing ex-wife and son, Deborah drops everything to be at his side. This
will either make their marriage stronger or test the newlyweds.
For me, reading Margaret Maron's books is like going to a family reunion. I identify with the characters and am
sure that she patterned some of her brothers after cousins on my Daddy's side. I truly enjoy every minute of her
books and would recommend them to anyone who wants a book that shows what the South is truly like.
