Witch Way to Murder
An Ophelia and Abby Mystery
by Shirley Damsgaard
Ophelia Jensen is a librarian in the small town of Summerset, Iowa. She is in her thirties
and a bit of a loner, running from a painful past. Abby is Ophelia's beloved grandmother
and, like most grandmothers, she loves to give advice, but hers is unusual advice. Abby
is a practicing witch and advises Ophelia to accept her own gifts and powers. Ophelia
just wishes they would go away and she could be a normal lonely person.
When someone begins to rob the local farmers of a fertilizer component that can be
made into bombs, Abby and Ophelia get drawn into the mystery, especially after a handsome
stranger enters the library introducing himself as a fertilizer salesman. With or without
her physic powers, Ophelia realizes that he is not what he seems and denies the attraction
he seems to feel for her. During a quiet walk in the woods, Ophelia stumbles upon a dead
body and, like it or not, she now becomes involved.
I quite enjoyed this series that shows witches as something a bit outside our normal
preconceived notions. Abby is a delightful grandmother who revels in using her Appalachian-style
witchery to help others and keep her loved ones safe. She has her hands full with her unhappy
granddaughter Ophelia, who wants nothing more than to deny her own birthright. The characters
are quite enjoyable and the atmosphere of the small town is well conveyed. I am looking
forward to more from Ms. Damsgaard. |
