Without a Word
A Rachel Andersen and Dash mystery, No. 8
by Carol Lea Benjamin
Rachel Alexander answers the plea of photographer Leon Spector to find his wife, Sally. Five years earlier, Sally
took their dog for a walk and never returned, leaving behind her husband and their daughter, Madison. Three days
later, Madison, a precocious child, stopped talking. Madison now suffers from a nervous disorder and is in therapy
with Dr. Eric Bechman, who is using botox to stop Madison's nervous tics.
Dr Beckman turns up dead, apparently stabbed with a syringe on which Madison's fingerprints are found. Police
surmise that Madison killed Beckman, following one of Madison’s outbursts. Leon enlists Alexander's aid in
finding Sally after all these years. He hopes that Sally's return will cause Madison to speak again and tell what
happened. Rachel is determined to prove Madison's innocence and find the cause of Sally's disappearance. In her
search she has to confront deep truths in her own past.
This is a well written, fast paced page turner. The author captures the mood of New York City, following
Alexander, with her pit bull, Dashiell, in her pursuit of the truth. Alexander's struggle to communicate with
Madison is told with feeling and understanding. |
