The Accidental Florist
A Jane Jeffry Mystery No. 16

by Jill Churchill

This is more of a love letter to fans of this series than a true mystery novel. Sure, there's a murder, and yes, an investigation. But the investigation is mostly offstage, and run by Police Detective Mel VanDyne rather than by series heroine Jane Jeffrey. Jane contributes a key suggestion, but is much more engaged with what's going on in her own life.

That's what this book is really about - some major changes in Jane's life and the lives of those around her: the sort of stuff you share with people who care about you as a person, rather than those looking for vicarious detecting adventures. I personally enjoyed hearing more about one of my favorite recent series threads - Jane’s experience writing and publishing her first book. I don't know how autobiographical that part is, but it sure feels real. Because the story is about ongoing series threads and related changes, this is more a book for existing fans than series newbies. And as much as friends of the series will love sharing such things as Jane's former and future mother-in-laws getting their well-deserved comeuppances, it's likely to disappoint those looking for a more standard murder mystery plot.

As her nest empties out, Jane has decided to accept the ring that Mel offered her a while back. She never turned him down, just said it wasn't the right time. Well it's time. In the meantime, she agrees to sign up with her best friend and neighbor Shelley for a self-protection class Mel is pushing. Neither thinks they need it, but both find it surprisingly helpful... up to the point where murder enters the curriculum. Not even arranging her own weddings (yes, weddings, plural - read the book and enjoy an appreciative grin) is going to keep Jane from using her wits to help solve the gruesome crime.

If you're already a fan, then curl up with some tea and settle in to enjoy some quality time with an old friend. If you're not a fan yet, go back and read a few earlier books, then come back and enjoy cheering on your new friend Jane.
