Acts of Nature
by Jonathon King
Max
Freeman (a former Philadelphia Police Officer turned Florida PI)
and his girlfriend, Sherry Richards (a Detective in Broward County
Florida) take some time off work to do some mutual discovering of
each other as both friends and lovers. They go to Max's cabin in
the Florida Everglades, cut off from society--away from everyone
and everything.
It's
late October, the end of hurricane season when Hurricane Simone,
a category three with hundred-mile-an-hour winds hits the Florida
Everglades and leaves Sherry severely injured. Now it's up to Max
to get her (and himself) to safety.
In
their effort to escape the ravaged Everglades and find safety and
medical help they encounter Buck and his flunkies, Markus and Wayne,
two-bit thieves who saw the hurricane as an opportunity that would
work in their favor. While Max and Sherry are being held hostage
by Buck and his flunkies, things become even more complicated when
Harmon and his partner, Squires, are dropped by helicopter into
the area. Harmon and Squires work for an unsavory oil company involved
in illegal drilling operations in the Everglades. There to get photos
of the damage and a general disposition of the property, they are
also a force to be reckoned with. It’s the job of Harmon and
his partner to forever silence anyone with any knowledge of the
illegal oil drilling.
Acts
of Nature has a moving dialog and an interesting cast of characters.
Jonathon King writes with plenty of action and adventure.
I
felt the characters were somewhat weak. More in-depth character
development would have made this an outstanding novel. Overall I
really did enjoy Acts of Nature.
