Chat
A Joe Gunther mystery

by Archer Mayor

Joe Gunther, detective with the Vermont Bureau of Investigation, is in the midst of the investigation of an unidentified woman murdered in a motel in Brattleboro, Vermont. He receives word that his mother and his brother Leo have been seriously injured in an automobile accident. He rushes to his family, where Leo regains consciousness long enough to tell him this was no accident. Leo had always been scrupulous in maintaining his cars. So when Joe has the local police examine the car involved in the accident, it is found that a mechanism had been tampered with.

Joe involves himself with the local police to find who would have wanted to kill his family. In the meantime a second, similar murder with a slightly different twist is discovered in a local motel room. Here investigators find that the murderer has used chat rooms to lure the victim to the motel room.

This is an excellently written police procedural with a complicated plot. It demonstrates the dangers of the chat rooms with their cloak of anonymity. The ruggedness of Vermont is vividly described. Joe and Leo's inner character is assumed to be a result of this ruggedness.
