Circle of Assassins
Tales from the Back Page #2

by Steven Rigolosi

Have you ever known someone so vile that you fantasized the person’s death? What would make your imaginary revenge turn into a real murder plot? What about the chance to rid society of a worthless and evil person with the promise of anonymity? A local newspaper advertisement offers to secretly murder anyone of your choosing. The twist? You must kill the target of another person’s choosing. Author Steven Rigolosi explores the dark side of human behavior when hatred and anonymity lock strangers into a Circle of Assassins.

Five strangers reply to the ad by the mastermind known only as "A." In a double-blind mailing, each stranger provides vital information about their target: name, address, and reasons they deserve to die. Betty, an elderly woman, scrimped everything she could to move out of the tiny, crime-ridden apartment building into her dream home in a friendly-family neighborhood. After a lifetime of sacrifice, Betty enjoys her new home until a drug dealer moves into a house down the street and brings back the terror and crime that Betty remembers from her old life. Tomas Rodriquez wants a corrupt police officer brought to justice for his criminal acts. The officer abuses women, commits adultery, and breaks the very laws he is supposed to protect. Leo Lentricchia wants his sister’s fiancé to be killed. The self-centered man cheats on his sister and disrespects their family. Leo would kill the man himself, but he’s made previous attempts on the scumbag’s life. Annette Bain secures a tenured-track job as a professor on a decent college campus. Annette maintains a professional demeanor, but she despises the pompous dean who shapes college life, women’s future, and society by his sexist and racist life. Mastermind "A" writes of his target, a convicted pedophile, who freely commits horrible acts against children. The pedophile seems to ride under legal radar after serving a fifteen-year sentence.

Mystery lovers will delight in Rigolosi’s non-linear, murderous tale. The story swirls as we read a variety of letters - from the strangers’ original replies to the characters’ personal letters and correspondence. The POV changes will keep readers glued. Rigolosi layers likable and horrid characters in a deadly game. For a twisted ride into murder, read every page of Circle of Assassins.
