The Da Vinci Cook
13th in the Angie Amalfi mystery series

by Joanne Pence

The Da Vinci Cook, by Joanne Pence, was my first encounter with chef-wannabe Angie Amalfi and her slightly eccentric Italian family. This time Angie gets embroiled in a murder and theft of a religious relic, both of which her sister, Cat, is accused of doing. Angie and Cat give chase to whom they think is the real culprit and find themselves in Italy with no luggage and little money. They are stalked, chased, kidnaped more than once, and shot at as they encounter archaeologists, priests, and restauranteurs. Back in the States, Angie’s fiancé is up to his eyeballs in worry for her and her sister, but also multiple murders and bureaucratic stonewalling.

The pace of this book was breath-taking, funny, and exciting. Pence’s ability to mislead, not only the reader but her characters, is an art form. I kept guessing the wrong person did it right up to the end, but the culprit was the logical choice.

Angie, of course, did her bit of cooking in this book, as I gather she does in the dozen other books in the series. Pence also does not neglect the juicy recipes she adds to the back of the book. This time she has three tasty recipes: Angie’s Orange-Cinnamon Biscotti, Pasta with Pancetta, and Italian-Style Bread Pudding with Chocolate and Amaretto Sauce. The price of the book is worth those three culinary gems alone. But the mysteries are equally delicious. Bravo, Joanne Pence!
