Death of a Maid
A Hamish MacBeth Series, No. 22
by M C Beaton
Hamish MacBeth, constable in the Highland village of Lochdubh, discovers the body of gossipy housecleaner, Mrs.
Mavis Gillespie, bludgeoned to death. All those she cleaned for praised her as a superb cleaner, even though
their houses were never cleaned. No one liked her.
Searching for reasons for Gillespie's murder, Hamish learns that Gillespie was a skilled blackmailer. He has
lots of suspects in the village. Added to this problem is the notice that a TV documentary is to be made about
him. Hamish manages to deflect the crew to his jealous senior colleague who always tries to thwart his
investigations. Hamish hopes this will delay any promotions for himself.
His former lady friend, Elspeth Grant, arrives on holiday from Glasgow. She brings with her a newspaper
colleague, who Hamish thinks is her new boyfriend. He begins to feel that perhaps his bachelorhood is not so
appealing....Or is it?
As usual with Hamish MacBeth, this is an enjoyable, absorbing story.
It is full of Highland atmosphere with appealing, likeable characters.
Hamish MacBeth is a character who you can't help but like and admire.
