End in Tears
A Wexford Novel #20

by Ruth Rendell
Read by Daniel Gerroll

In her recent crime novel, infamous British author Ruth Rendell brings Reginald Wexford back into the limelight. Some may remember Wexford being introduced back in 1964 (From Doon with Death). Now Inspector General, working with two interesting detectives, Wexford tries to solve the death of an 18 year-old woman. The story begins with a man carrying a large piece of concrete towards an intended victim. The crime is actually drawn out and many, including the innocent, are dragged into the investigation. Wexford is tedious in his investigation. His team interviews relatives and friends, trying to find out who, what, and most of all, why. The actual reasons for the deaths are clouded and confusing at first, but Wexford has his own ideas. During this investigation, Wexford endures some personal issues and readers see a possible romance between Detective Sergeant Hannah Goldsmith and Detective Constable Bal Bhattacharya. Hannah is modern and witty. Bal is a bit on the odd side when it comes to relationships.

It’s a British whodunit, full of reality and disappointments in mankind. Wexford is a likable character. His team is a bit quirky. The mystery takes many directions as sub-plots are added. And just when it seems like you know why Amber was killed, another clue is dropped or turn is taken. The conclusion will take you by surprise. I know it did me.

Actor Daniel Gerroll narrates the audio version. He handles Wexford and the many accents very well. End in Tears is complex British whodunit worth picking up. If you’re a fan of British Detective novels, you’ll enjoy this one. And if you’ve read Elizabeth George or P.D. James’ novels, you will most likely enjoy the Wexford series. Ruth Rendall also writes as Barbara Vine.
