French Fried
A Culinary Mystery #10

by Nancy Fairbanks

Food writer Carolyn Blue and her husband, a chemistry professor, are going to France. Jason is attending a conference and she gets to tag along. Carolyn is thrilled! She loves food and travel. A trip that combines both sounds like paradise to her.

As soon as the plane lands in France, Jason hurries off to the university. Carolyn is left to find her way to the hotel on foot. When she finally finds the hotel, the only thing she can think of is finding a bed and collapsing in it. Unfortunately, when she gets to her room, she finds her bed already occupied...by a corpse.

Robert Levasseur was sent by the conference organizer to greet Carolyn and Jason at their hotel. While waiting for them, he foolishly decided to sample the pate` on their welcome tray. The poison in it killed him within minutes.

Carolyn is convinced that someone is trying to kill them. Jason is not so sure. Even when he is involved in a hit and run the next day, he remains skeptical. But as more incidents occur, he reluctantly admits that maybe Carolyn is right. Carolyn must stop the killer before Jason’s goose is cooked.

Despite its witty title, this book is short on humor and long on marital discord. It does have quite a few good recipes and is filled with information about the history and food of Lyon and Avignon, France.

If a person is already a fan of this series or if they enjoy reading about food and/or history, it might be just their cup of tea.
