Gun Shy
Blanco County, No. 5
by Ben Rehder
This fifth Blanco County book for Ben Rehder sort of lampoons the Gun Control lobbyists and shows what many think
is the real issue behind the controversy. His book is humorous, riddled with intelligent innuendo and thought
about a very serious issue, the one of gun control in this country. Including IF we should have it, when
the gun doesn’t kill a person, the gun holder pulls the trigger of his own volition.
The National Weapons Alliance (NWA) is having a huge rally at the Blanco County, Texas ranch of a
Country/Western Superstar named Mitch Campbell. While he is, ahem, under the influence of some ‘shrooms, an
addle minded Mitch tries to cover-up the killing of his gardener by getting the sort of unsavory NWA Texas branch
President Dale Stubbs, involved. It turns into a rout when a group called SNATCH (Society of Nonviolent Americans
to Control Handguns) shows up with plans of a protest against the NWA rally. There are several little subplots that
come up in Gun Shy that make for good reading and diversion, such as the NWA Branch Pres. not being who he
says he is, and some schemes and quests to cover up around a sitcom star who is trying to prevent a convict from
being released from prison for shooting her son a few years before, providing some rather strong points about the
control of guns in general and why it is such a volatile issue.
This book is well put together and worth reading both for the entertainment value as well as to reflect on the
instigation of lobbyists who want to make gun control and the lack of those rights a really big issue in our
political arenas. Now is an especially good time for everyone to read this, after the horror that just happened at
Virginia Tech. It presents the inside issues for both sides. But this book will make even people like me who
have already sided up on one side or the other take time to pause and think. Personally, I don’t adhere to what
the advocates for gun control want, and I think as many do that having a right to protect one-self is a right
given to us by our Constitution and the Second Amendment and should never be taken away from us, no matter what...
There should be restraints put in place so that things like Virginia Tech don’t happen, but the right to bear arms
is a given in our country and we should be allowed to have them, if we so choose. |
