In the Shadow of the Glacier

by Vicki Delany

Constable Molly Smith is trying to deal with the psychological trauma of the death of her husband and to start a career in law enforcement. Tonight, rookie Smith is making her rounds in the little town of Trafalgar, British Columbia when she discovers the body of big, overbearing Reg Montgomery in an alley behind some of the town's businesses. Murders are rare in this part of British Columbia, and the new Sgt. John Winters, just arrived from Vancouver with his own set of personal problems, doesn't know anyone in town, so he assigns Molly to assist him in the investigation; but there is definitely friction between them. The older, experienced officer and the rookie just don't see things the same way. Montgomery was also a newcomer. He was planning to build a luxury resort just outside of town, and that project was deeply resented by many in the town.

Molly's mother is instrumental in finalizing plans to erect a memorial to American draft resisters who fled to Canada during the Vietnam War, financed by a bequest to the town from one of those resisters. The community is filled with protesters, both for the memorial and the resort proposal. The action is kicked into high gear when an American TV personality who fuels his show with controversial issues arrives in town to agitate his way into a hot story. The townspeople are turned against each other, with law enforcement between the two factions, and friction within the police ranks. Emotions are running on high octane. It's impossible to put this book down.

I'm never disappointed in the mysteries published by Poisoned Pen Press; they keep their promise of excellence in mystery. Delaney has definitely found her niche in mystery storytelling. The characters are unforgettable, the action unrelenting, and the multi-level plot is twisted into a fine skein. Delaney has written two previous Poisoned Pen novels (also reviewed on Myshelf): Scare the Light Away, and Burden of Memory, and now she is working on the next Molly Smith and John Winters story in this exciting new series, and I'm impatient. She has the touch.
