Irish Linen
A Nuala Anne McGrail series, No. 10
by Andrew M Greeley
Nuala Anne McGrail, singer and psychic, learns that Desmond Doolin, a young man from her Chicago neighborhood, is
missing in the Middle East. He is supposed to be on a peace mission to Iraq. The government may know his
whereabouts, but isn't talking, and may have given him up for lost. His family believes he is dead. Nuala is
convinced that he is alive. She and her adoring husband, Dermot Coyne, research Desmond's path through the
Middle East while pondering his relationship with the Catholic Church.
Nuala and Deremot had been reading the memoirs of Timothy Patrick Clarke, an Irish diplomat living in Nazi
Germany who risked his life for a German widow and was involved in a secret plot to kill Hitler. Nuala and Dermot
find Desmond's disappearance and Clarke's situation to have many similarities. The two become involved in the
Middle East turmoil in their efforts to find what happened to Desmond.
This is a love story as well as a mystery. The love between fiery and unpredictable Nuala and solid and modest
Dermot and their ideal marriage is all too evident with their dependence on each other. The banter between the
two is at times comical.
Greeley once again portrays Chicago's middle class with focus on the cultural idiosyncrasies of the Irish. This
is a delight to read....a perfect blend of mystery, romance and suspense. |
