Last Shot
Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Rackley Book 4
by Gregg Hurwitz
Gregg Hurwitz's books just keep getting better and better. His latest, Last Shot, is a convoluted
thriller that pits Deputy US Marshal Tim Rackley, a recurring character in Hurwitz' last four novels, against
prison escapee Walker Jameson. They are equal tacticians, but Jameson always keeps one step ahead. Against a
cop recapturing an escaped convict story is the sordid tale of how wrong big business can go inside the
pharmaceutical industry.
Hurwitz has always been able to create believable characters and to draw authentic environments and
situations. What he has done with Last Shot is to reveal Jameson's character layer by layer, admiring the
man, yet hating what he is doing. Hurwitz got into the head of killer in Do No Harm, though that one was
really whacked out. Jameson was a soldier who was groomed for extreme ops and who became jaded and distorted by
extended wartime missions. When he breaks out of prison so close to his release date, Deputy Marshal Rackley
knows that something isn't right. As brutalized bodies begin to turn up in Jameson's wake, Rackley seeks to
find out why, while he keeps up a relentless pursuit of the escapee.
Never one to just present a good story, Hurwitz always has something more to say in his thrillers. This time
it's commentary about war and about drug companies and research. It's startling and timely. However, whether
you’re into the politics or not, Last Shot is a burning page turner. You don't even notice you've read
nearly 500 pages by the time the last shot rings out. Gregg Hurwitz, you've done it again. This one hits the
bulls-eye! |
