The Leper's Return
A Knight Templar/Medieval West Country mystery #6
by Michael Jecks
Sir Baldwin Farnshill, Keeper of the Kings Peace and a former Knight Templar, and his partner Simon Puttock,
bailiff of Lydford, are in the town of Crediton. They are charged with solving the murder of a local gold
merchant and the assault of his daughter. John of Haunde, a womanizer of some notoriety is suspected of being
responsible. But there are rumors about the lepers of St Lawrence Hospital, with the town prone to blame all its
ills on the lepers. The two must find the true culprit and apprehend him before tensions build beyond control
and lead to the slaughter of the outcasts.
The story is well written and thoroughly researched. The historical detail and atmosphere add to a plot that
captures the imagination.
There is a wealth of information about the world of lepers and the people who care for them; the fears and
ignorance of the populace of the time that led to their ostracism. The characters, especially those of Baldwin
and Simon, are well developed with human flaws and weaknesses.
An excellent view into the world of medieval England. |
