Lone Creek

by Neil McMahon

Lone Creek has compelling dialog and is filled with plenty of action and adventure. The interesting characters and exceptional writing make Lone Creek an immensely entertaining suspense novel to read. Neil McMahon weaves together a story that will keep you guessing until the very end. Neil McMahon has joined the ranks of my favorite authors.

Wesley and Laurie Balcomb are the new owners of the Pettyjohn Ranch. The ranch is about ten miles northwest of Helena, Montana, up against the foothills of the Rockies, and located along Lone Creek. The Balcombs are in the process of restoring the rundown mansion on the ranch.

Hugh Davoran works on Pettyjohn Ranch as a construction hand. He had worked on this very same ranch twenty-five years earlier, and the ranch holds many memories for him - particularly those of Celia, his first teenage crush who died there years ago. Her death was ruled an accident, but Hugh had his doubts and never believed the verdict. He left Montana afterwards to attend Stanford., then got married and worked as a journalist in California.

He has now returned after his failed marriage and unsatisfying career as a journalist, for the peace, the quiet, the solitude. Unfortunately that's not what he finds.

While Hugh is working on a quiet Saturday afternoon, he finds two dead stallions, both shot at close range and their bodies mutilated and concealed. Not knowing who had done this or why, Hugh wants to proceed with extreme caution and stay off the killer's radar. But it doesn't work out that way, and soon he's fired from his job and arrested for both stealing lumber and assaulting another ranch hand.

Hugh doesn't know who did this or why the horses were slaughtered, but he knows whoever is behind it will kill to keep it a secret. Hugh partners with Madbird, a long time friend and the only person he can trust, to solve this dilemma and save himself from a prison term.
