Night of the Living Deb
A Debutante Dropout Mystery #4

by Susan McBride

Just when defiant Dallas ex-deb Andrea Kendricks thinks life is as easy as finding a Tex-Mex restaurant in the Lone Star State, her mummy, intimidating matron Cissy, challenges Andrea’s open-mindedness by announcing a romantic weekend getaway with her gentleman friend, ex-Treasury agent Stephen Howard, who makes a return appearance from the last book. Not only that, Andy gets caught in a clinch with a Chippendale by main squeeze Brian Malone’s ex-girlfriend and colleague, "Attila the Blonde," Allie Price. Oh, and Brian has absconded with a stripper named Trayla Trash following a tipsy bacchanal. We know, of course, that adorable Brian prefers Andy to double-D boobs because we get his side of the story in a refreshing prologue. Trouble is Andy realizes she’s kept Brian a bit at arm’s length emotionally, and she doesn’t know him as well as she thought. But she’s sure there’s a good explanation, and she goes on the hunt.

If you think Cissy will stay out of Andy’s quest, you either (a) haven’t been reading the series or (b) don’t know mothers.

Cissy and Andrea are the best, most realistic, and to my knowledge the only, mother-daughter relationship in contemporary mystery fiction. Their relationship may not be gooey, but you wouldn’t expect two strong-willed Texas women to dissolve like melted soufflés. The accidental detective team of the two Kendricks women advances the plot and hilariously complicates life for our heroine. As usual, humor, emotional revelations, thrilling Texan twists, and daughterly headaches abound in Andrea’s fourth outing.
