The Refuge
A Maxine and Stretch Mystery #3
by Sue Henry
Maxie McNabb is looking forward to a peaceful Alaskan summer at home after her RV adventures in
The Serpents Trail and
The Tooth of Time (also reviewed on this
site). But her idyll is short-lived, and soon she finds herself in Hawaii, a guest of an old acquaintance. Karen
Bailey plans to move back to her native Alaska and needs help packing as she has recently broken an arm and a leg,
but she is not the easiest person to be around. Nor is her irascible landlord, and soon Maxie, minus her faithful
dachshund and her beloved Mini-Winnie, finds herself in trouble yet again, as somebody is keen on getting hold of
something... but what?
I confess to being an addict of these books, and although I normally like my mysteries to feature at least one
murder, this doesn’t and I still found those pages turning at a lightning speed. Maxie is a great storyteller:
levelheaded, joyful, and getting the most out of life, and also a wonderful tour guide for the armchair traveller.
Hawaii, with its tropical flowers, wealth of local history, and volcanoes, is as much the focus as anything else,
but there is plenty of mystery in here too and I certainly didn’t guess it all. There is just the right light
touch, and plenty to interest readers of all ages. Despite Maxie’s sixty-something age, this is very much a book
that can appeal to anybody who likes their protagonists fun-loving and courageous, but sensible rather than ditzy!
Maxie is never her own worst enemy, so many of the less appealing (to me, anyway) clichés of detective fiction are
avoided. Readers of Sue Henry’s original series will enjoy catching up with Jessie Arnold, who is in there as well.
A cozy series to treasure. |
