Silhouette in Scarlet
Vicky Bliss Murder Mystery, # 3
by Elizabeth Peters
Vicky Bliss is back for her third adventure, courtesy of Constable Robinson, who is thoughtfully repeating the
whole five book series. This time she receives a one-way ticket to Stockholm, a red rose and a Latin message
from Sir John Smythe. As Sweden is the land of her ancestors (well, some of them) how can she resist? Once
there she finds herself embroiled in a race to find a lost treasure, but getting held at the mercy of a gang of
villains wasn’t exactly what she had planned.
When I think of the true definition of a caper, I think of this series. Ms Peters makes it all sound such
fun, and has the right light touch for this type of thing so it all seems a tremendous game. This book also
has possibly her most interesting villain, and some great descriptions of Sweden in the 1970s, another boon
with this series. This is perhaps less feminist than some of the other books, as her woes would have been
considerably fewer if she had been able to resist John’s wiles, but Vicky is still very much on top in most
situations and makes a fine narrator. What a pity there are only five books in the series... |
