Stalker
a Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus novel # 12

by Faye Kellerman

Cynthia (Cindy), daughter of LAPD homicide detective Peter Decker, has become a rookie cop in the LAPD's Hollywood division. Her colleagues think she is snobbish, because of her college education, standoffish, and trading on her father's reputation. She is none of these. She is stalked and threatened. Her apartment is trashed. She is frightened but won't admit it and reluctant to confide in her overprotective father.

Peter and his assistant, Marge, are faced with a series of car-jackings. The thief targets young women carrying babies. He soon sees a connection to the carjacking of Armand Crayton, a sleazy real estate developer, a year ago. Crayton apparently died when the car crashed after he was kidnapped in a carjacking. Cindy's involvement may be caused by her casual acquaintance with Crayton at a sport gym. Cindy sets out to determine who wants to harm her.

Kellerman added Cindy to the continuing story of Peter and Rina. She is an engaging heroine, developing a tense relationship between the father and daughter. It will be interesting to watch her progress in future books. Kellerman also deals with the problems women face in the male police world and how they cope with them.

This is an excellent police procedural with constant action and suspense. The atmosphere and feel of Los Angeles is successfully evoked.
