Once on the scene, he’s unsure if they plan to make demands or a single violent statement. When Bennett takes the call from "Jack," he realizes he’s dealing with a madman ready to take the City of New York psychologically captive. An exceptional first in series. Not only is Patterson up to his customary style of unrelenting suspense, he also brings fans a new and interesting protagonist. Throughout the novel, Patterson moves from the suspense of the hostage negotiations to the drama of Bennett’s personal life, with his dying Irish wife and ten adopted children. How much more vulnerable can one get than losing a loved one, holding a family together, and facing it all during Christmas? It’s the perfect emotional recipe to make readers care - and it works! Step on a Crack has left me anticipating the next in series. Michael Ledwidge joins Patterson in penning this series. Ledwidge is author of The Narrowback, Bad Connections and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Actors John Slattery and Reg Rogers narrated the audio version. They successfully take on the personas of Detective Bennett and "Jack,”" and bring this powerful drama to life. It’s a suspenseful ride with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy.
