Tombs of Endearment
Pepper Martin series #3
by Casey Daniels
If you have read
Don of the Dead and
The Chick and the Dead (both also reviewed
on this site) then you will be familiar with cemetery tour guide Pepper Martin. After hitting her head on a
headstone she found that she could see dead people, and they want her to bring their killers to justice. This
time the ghostly client is rock legend Damon Curtis, whose spaced-out lyrics and gorgeous looks made him a star
until his untimely death in 1971. Did he die from a drugs overdose or not, and why do parts of him keep
disappearing?
Supernatural crime fiction is not normally my whodunit sub-genre of choice, but I make an exception for this
smart, funny and pacey series. I love the plot strands that run through all the books, the men in Pepper’s
life (who exactly is Dan?), the murder mysteries and the lively narration style. This time, although everything
else is there, the plot could have done with a bit more fleshing out, including something to make it less
linear. I felt that there wasn’t quite enough there to make it up to the high standard of the other two; a
shame as this is shaping up to be a fine series. That is not to say the book is without its merits as there
is plenty to enjoy - a satirical look at an aging rock band, Pepper’s old flame, various other ghosts and a
surprising romance. I look forward to seeing how the various plot strands shape up, and what Ms Daniels does
with them. |
